Gawain and the Green Knight [Plot]
1-
Green knight/giant disturbs feast in Camelot
2- He challenges them all [he wants someone to strike his neck and in a year and one day he will repay that stroke]
3- King Arthur steps forward but then he is turned back by Sir Gawaine who decides that the King should not be the one to die.
4- He cuts off the head of the Green Knight, yet he does not die and so he reminds him of their meeting in a year and leaves
1-
After a year, Sir Gawain gets ready to go to the “Green Chapel” where
the green knight is supposed to be.
2-
On the way he has a lot of adventures but he still doesn’t find the
chapel
3-
He has the picture of the Virgin Mary on the inside of his shield and on
the outside a 5 pointed star.
4-
When he doesn’t find the chapel he prays and so Gawain suddenly
stumbles upon a grand castle.
5-
The King of that Castle is married to a beautiful lady. They convince
Gawain to stay 3 days atleast.
6-
He is nice and just to Gawain and tells him that tomorrow he would go
hunting and whatever the king won he would give to Gawain. But whatever Gawaine
wins in the castle he should give to the King.
1-
In Gawains’ Chambers, the lady threatens flirtatiously to imprison him
if he doesn’t give in to her.
2-
He denies her and she
settles for a kiss before she leaves
3-
So the next day the King gives all the deer they got from the hunt to
Gawaine, in exchange, Gawain gives the King a kiss and doesn’t tell him from
whom. [Since it wasn’t part of the agreement.]
4-
The 2nd day the Lady seduces him again but he kisses her twice
only.
5-
The king then gives all the hunt again to Gawain and in return gets 2
kisses from Gawain.
6-
The third day, he gives 3 kisses to the Lady who continues to seduce him.
7-
She wants him to have a token to remind him of her, and he refuses
everything until she mentions a Girdle [belt] that doesn’t let him die. He
takes that.
8-
He then gives the King 3 kisses [doesn’t mention the girdle] and
prepares to leave.
1-
Gawain meets the Green Knight. He exposes his neck but then flinches and
moves away when the Green Knight attacks.
2-
The Green knight yells at Gawain, but the second stroke also stops.
3-
The third stroke only scars Gawain’s neck.
4-
Gawain is overjoyed because he said the deal was ‘one stroke.’
5-
The green knight says that he was the king and that the first 2 feinted
strokes are for the first 2 days when he gave everything as the game goes. But
the 3rd stroke was for the girdle he kept. So Gawain is a fine man,
his only weakness is the love of life.
